Civil Disobedience
Excerpt from “Thoreau”
He who gives himself entirely to his fellow-men appears to them useless and selfish; but he who gives himself partially to them is pronounced a benefactor and philanthropist. How does it become a man to behave toward this American government today? I answer, that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government which is the slaves government also.
This author is saying if you do whatever your fellow-men tells you to do without analyzing it, then you have no conscience and you are considered meaningless. You should think for yourself, be a contributor and not be manipulated by the government. The author saw government laws as if they were associated with slavery. That is, a person who does not have the right to his/her own opinion. But, has to abide by what’s in the law.
I found this passage interesting, because, people tend to manipulate others very easily. For instance, the National Rifle Association, they represent the gun manufactures, not regular gun owners. However, because the President and his team came up with a few worthwhile ideas, this organization is spreading fear, that the President is going to take away guns from ordinary folks. I really wish that the man on the street could see and understand what is at stake here. It has nothing to do with the right to bear arms, but instead, the almighty dollar. Guns are a big business. Everyone has the right to have a pistol and a shot gun. There is no need to have a semi-automatic weapon in your home. Unless, I guess if you live in present day Syria. Thoreau made his argument clear on civil disobedience and that government sometimes makes decisions that helps only a few, but affects the majority of society. The N.R.A is defending the gun makers, but that irresponsibility is negatively affecting the entire country.
Excerpt from “Stanton”
We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights government are instituted, deriving their just powers from the consent of the government.
Stanton initiated the first organization to promote women's rights. She inspired women to stand up for themselves. This quote clearly states what she was trying to accomplish with her movements. Stanton wanted equality between citizens and the right to life; however, in order to maintain those rights the government had to comply.
I chose this quote because I am proud to be a woman. Moreover, I am extremely appreciative of the sacrifices that many pioneered for me. I salute Elizabeth Stanton.
