Quote from Woodrow Wilson-When you offer the securities of a great corporation to anybody who wishes to purchase them, you must open that corporation to the inspection of everybody who wants to purchase.
Woodrow Wilson is saying that if you want to benefit from the public sphere, than the public has a right to know what is going on inside that private enterprise. The corporation benefits from the public streets, the cops that patrol those public streets and the Government that tax said venture should always scrutinize such an undertaking. Corporations cannot claim to be private at one moment, and then at another, they benefit enormously from the public. Oversight is essential in the quest for integrity.
I chose this quote because there is a school of thought that states that there are too many regulations, and that if Government steps back, the free reign of the market will dictate the outcome. Well, that is simply incorrect. I strongly believe that all endeavors should have checks and balances.
