Excerpt from "Dubois"
He was also one of the first to write about the importance of the church in the black community. He also believed that a small part of the population “The Talented Tenth” as in ten percent of the black population was necessary in order to form a class of leadership, which has somewhat of an anti-democratic aspect to it.
Here I think Dubois was somewhat of a contradiction. I say a contradiction because obviously he was against discrimination. He was also against any type of superiority complex. However, here he is really supporting a caste system. Certainly, I comprehend what he is saying/doing, but that does not make it correct. Is he saying that some blacks are better and more intelligent than others? Well, if that was his point of view, than, he was agreeing with the racists.
I chose this passage because I honestly believe that all people are equal. Sure, there will be some that are more successful than others. But, customarily that is because they were lucky. I know many people are going say that they worked very hard to succeed. Well that is fine and dandy, but luck still plays a part in being victorious. As I stated originally, everyone deserves a chance, and with this particular stance, I disagree with Dubois’ view of choosing one group over another.
